Love it. Love lichen. Can you believe that that stuff is alive? It's amazing.

It is amazing! When you start to stare at it up close, it becomes a micro version of the macro world. Apparently Tucson is replete with awesome lichens.

Who needs water or culture when you can have small, rocklike plants?

::laughing::

Seriously, I don't think the culture is that bad, all things considering. We have some good music venues and a great independent movie theater. And Mexican food. And lots of good writers who live here or spend a good of time visiting each year.

Food means nothing to me. I would definitely take the "never have to eat again" pill. The music venues are admittedly first-rate, with the exception of the Rialto which is appalingly average in comparison. Yes, I should spend more time with visiting artists, in particular authors. I have no idea how one would go about doing that. How do people even get books published? It's all a mystery.

But you cook brilliantly! Or is that why you aren't interested?

BTW, I saw Sonic Youth at The Rialto last week. It was the first show I've seen there that was truly great in terms of both sound and vibe. They were at their finest. And I was in the perfect spot.

Sound Guys are Idiots (in general).

I enjoy cooking, but not eating so much. I don't really... like it. If I ate what I wanted I would eat Mountain Dew, Symphony bars, and pepperoni pizza. I think "heroin : methadone :: how I used to eat : how I eat now" would be the SAT version of what food means to me. I just don't want to have a heart attack at 44, you know? I enjoy the challenges involved in cooking. In any case, thanks!

I am glad that you enjoyed Sonic Youth at Rialto. I am reasonably sure that I would've found something to not like. I have never been a big Sonic Youth fan. I guess the right kind of band would sound good at Rialto. There's a certain kind of sound guy... who sets it up to sound good with the kinds of bands that he likes, and when bands with a different sound come in, he doesn't change anything. This confirms that those bands "suck" in his mind, and he goes about mixing every band as if they were Metallica, or the Cramps, or whatever it is that he likes.

I think PLUSH really only sounds so great because they are operating under threat of closure if it gets too loud. So they keep it quiet. Keeping it quiet means you don't have to nix all the high end... not nixing the high end means bands sound better (but only if you keep the overall volume level down).

Re: Sound Guys are Idiots (in general).

I had figured that you would not be much of a Sonic Youth fan, based on my sense of what really rocks your world. Still, there's always the chance that you might have been converted!

It saddens me to hear that you don't enjoy eating as much as cooking. I can understand, having had similar superficially counter-intuitive feelings in my own life. Still, I would like to think that you will one day turn the corner and rediscover the pleasure of consuming both your own creations and those of others.

I am pathologically incapable of ritualizing anything, I think. Once a pathway is burned in, it might as well be turned off.

Oh, dear. I think that's admirable, in many ways, but must be very hard to live with!
