Point of Contention
Could Chris Paul be the best point guard-sized point guard since Isaiah Thomas? Tony Parker looked so good last year and against the Suns. But Paul is making him look like a poser. I don't ask this question to slight Steve Nash, who has been a tremendous player for the past half decade, or John Stockton, whose consistency was a wonder to behold. But neither of them could take over a game the way Paul can, the way he has done in the third quarter tonight. And neither of them had the speed to disrupt opposing offenses the way Paul can. He actually reminds me a lot of Jason Kidd when he was younger and quicker, though he's getting by with a lot less size than Kidd did.

Age Catches Up With You
The only explanation I can see for the Hawks pushing the Celtics to a seventh game in their first-round series is that Boston is relying too much on players with a lot of mileage. Still, I didn't see this coming. Unless the Celtics get strong bench play, allowing Pierce, Allen, and Garnett to rest, I don't think they're going to do much in the playoffs. I'm fairly confident they'll close out Atlanta, but not as confident as I was before tonight's game.

I Could Use a Little Verfremdung Right Now
This hasn't been a good year for me. The sports teams I identify with have had little good fortune. And the player I spent years defending is not even playing right now. Tonight the Suns, whom I've grown fond of, bit the dust. I'm starting to wonder whether my devotion is bound up with a curse, like appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated. At least I can appreciate good play in spite of my allegiances. Although I don't haven any emotional investment in Chris Paul, for example, I can't help but notice that he really is as good as advertised.

Really?
I wasn't shocked that the Warriors gave the Mavs rough time last year, though their eventual triumph was more than I'd expected. But the Hawks? Either the East is better than advertised or a lot worse. Time will tell.

Spurs Are Really Knives
I'm rooting for the Suns right now. But it looks like I won't be doing so much longer. Say what you will about the Spurs, they play superb team basketball. Personally, I like them better than most teams. And I learn things every time I watch them. Their spacing on the court is particularly fine, enabling dribble drives and kick outs even better that the Phoenix system, though their offense is less flashy to watch. I'd love to see them take on the Lakers. It give me glee to root against Kobe, even though he's sublime to watch.

And Marksman!
Wow. It was a banner day for former Cal players. After Powe's effort against the Nets, Jason Kidd torched the Hornets for twenty-seven points in a triple double and then Sean Marks, who almost never plays, got a career high sixteen points and thirteen rebounds to go with them. Maybe some good luck will come my way. As if. . .

Power
It was a meaningless game, but tonight's Celtics-Nets contest still made me smile, because former Cal star Leon Powe, who deserves every good thing that comes his way, scored a career-high 27 points -- and had 11 rebounds to go with them -- in Boston's victory. Practicing with Kevin Garnett sure seems to be having a positive effect on his and Glen Davis's play.

Sugar Shaq
There are too many variables to say whether the Phoenix Suns' daring experiment will lead to the desired end. But the second half of tonight's game against the San Antonio Spurs provided the best picture yet of what their management had in mind. After watching Shaq stumble through his first games with the team, it's stunning to see him scoring so effectively in the low post. Also, it's becoming more and more clear that his presence provides benefits even when he's sitting on the bench, because the opposing team's front line wears down much faster. I should add, in closing, that it's remarkable how many great regular season games there have been this year. The intensity far exceeds that of any year I can recall. And that means going all the way back to the days when Elvin Hayes and Wes Unseld were in the Finals.

Directivity
Billy Packer gets a lot of shit for saying "should" so often. The tone of his voice doesn't help, I suppose, though I find his southeastern Pennsylvania textures strangely soothing. Nor does the sense he projects of always being right, even though we all know that he has frequently been wrong, as when he maligned George Mason and other mid-majors a few years back. That said, it seems to me that he is correct a lot more often than not. Yes, the Bruins should have found a way to get Kevin Love more touches. No, Darren Collison should not have been covering his fabulous freshman counterpart. I'm starting to wonder whether Ben Howland doesn't have one of those deficiencies that becomes apparent at a certain level, for his in-game adjustments tend to underwhelm. Oh, well. I never thought UCLA would win this one.

But the Tarheels, should they prevail in the second game, have a much better chance, since they can match Memphis's "length" on the perimeter, which has been hyped to death, but is no shorter for all the attention. Anyway, to return to my opening point, I'm lifting a can of Coca-Cola in your honor Billy, even if you were a self-absorbed jerk at Liberty High. It means something that I've heard you announce every NCAA Final since my first, save the one I had to listen to on Armed Forces Radio in Germany. There's something to be said for consistency and excellence, even when the combination seems overbearing. You should get way more props than you do.

Maybe This Much-Maligned Experiment Will Work After All
As ESPN's Bill Simmons and others have recently noted, the Phoenix Suns' acquisition of Shaquille O'Neal has started to bear fruit in the performance of Amare Stoudemire who, freed from the responsibility of having to pretend to be a center, is now able to roam outside of the paint and catch the ball where he can put his defender at the biggest disadvantage. And O'Neal himself seems to be playing himself into post-season shape. Last night he went for 20 points and 12 rebounds against the Nuggets, nicely complementing Stoudemire's MVP-caliber 40 points and 14 rebounds. Oh, and Steve Nash had 36 points and 8 assists himself. Let's not forget, either, that a big reason the Suns are in the position they are now can be attributed to the savvy off-season acquisition of Grant Hill, who has managed to remind us how great he could have been, had the injuries not derailed his career, and how good he still can be. I do think, though, that between Stoudemire's recovery from microfracture surgery, Nash's capacity to cope with chronic back pain, O'Neal's surprising resurgence and Hill's suddenly improved luck, the Suns would be advised not to add any more players with physiological question marks to their roster. It's only a matter of time before the fixation on performance enhancement lights upon the NBA. To think that the days of careers damaged and destroyed by cocaine now inspire a nostalgia for a simpler time. . .

Where's Lorenzo Charles When You Need Him?
Sometimes I wonder whether the real point of watching March Madness isn't to reconcile ourselves to the fact that, no matter how far the underdog makes it, there will always be a bigger, badder Hund to prevail in the end. But then I remember that Michigan State's brutal trouncing of Penn or Florida's roughing up of George Mason are always going to be offset by the tales of Texas Western, North Carolina State and Villanova.

How About a Dollar Sign Instead?
When I was in East Berlin back in 1987 I went into a bookstore looking for history books. But I couldn't find any for a good portion of the twentieth century. Maybe it was just a joke, but the clerk told me, "Those are being revised right now."

Pouring One Out For Ben, Even Though It Was a Good Time To Go
Even though newspaper comment threads are frequented by some of the most frightening characters this side of the Bush Administration, I decided to muster all my courage and make a comment in defense of Cal's just-fired men's basketball coach Ben Braun. And, lo and behold, a few people actually took the time to second my thoughts and thank me for expressing them. I 'll probably get bashed, in the end, but think it was worth it to give the man some of the respect he is due.

Mind you, that doesn't mean that I'm going to stop fantasizing about having a coach who can get his players to understand how to develop a possession properly, instead of repeating the same motions over and over until someone feels obliged to heave up a shot before the buzzer. Everything I know about playing basketball tells me that such pedagogy is extremely difficult. But I also know it can be done. Washington State's Tony Bennett is a prime example of a coach who consistently pulls that feat off.
