Kim and I just watched The Others. She saw it when it was in theaters, with her mother, but it was my first time.

She said it was way better the second time, especially since the theater had had a bad print.

But I was pretty impressed with the first go-round.

As I said to her about 3/4 of the way through, "This is a great movie because you don't know who to be scared of."

I'm not a huge fan of most horror subgenres, but the haunted house one is an exception. My favorite horror films are almost all variations on the subgenre: The Shining, The Changeling, and, less obviously, this year's 28 Days Later.

If there's a specific reason for this, besides my general fascination with the coupling of memory and location, it's that I spent my first eleven years in a house whose oldest portion dated from the early 1700s and eleven more in a house -- 617 Napa Street in Vallejo -- that had been the home of witches and had a "ghost" Kim and I experienced again and again.

Anyway, it's not exactly a Halloween film, but The Others is good viewing at this time of year.

An addendum. Right when the movie ended, a cat was on the back porch making that terrible yowl, scaring our domesticated felines something fierce.
