McCain Again

A while back, I characterized John McCain as having been gradually "reeled in" by the Bush campaign. That assertion was staunchly countered by Steven and others who pointed out how conservative McCain's voting record is. I have no doubts on that latter score, but still get the sense that McCain has misgivings about our current President that go beyond his rage at being poorly treated by Bush supporters in the 2000 primary season. Today's news supports that conviction:
Republican Sen. John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam, called an ad criticizing John Kerry's military service "dishonest and dishonorable" and urged the White House on Thursday to condemn it as well.
Perhaps McCain is simply acting as a man "de honor" on this point. Either way, his comments are the kind of intervention that may undercut the nastier tactics that Karl Rove has in mind.
