Nostalgia For What Wasn't

While I was intrigued to learn that the Arcade Fire seeks out hoops action on tour and somewhat enviously surprised to see evidence of Win Butler's jumping ability, today's photo-rich Pitchfork story about the band's trip to People's Park mostly just made me miss Berkeley terribly. Despite it's storied history, though, I never felt that strongly about the park. And I certainly never dreamed of playing basketball there, for reasons both political -- I was at least loyal enough to the last twitches of the Movement not to endorse the park's conversion into a sporting zone -- and practical -- concrete means brutal punishment for one's knees. Perhaps it was just the fog-filtered June light that stimulated my longing.
