Little Moments, Big Deal

These days, when so many things seem to be going wrong for so many people, little moments can seem big. Not everything today went well, but enough did to give me a boost. I was able to go for a nice swim. I accomplished my tasks of the morning without any complications or crises. I had a nice conversation with a friend. Skylar had another fine day at school. It's always nice to see her smiling. She showed me the "Smalltown" area where she and many other kids in her year have created an imaginary village limned by carefully arranged rocks. We enjoyed listening to songs from Sweeney Todd on the drive down Campbell. Her martial arts class gave her an ovation for showing up even though she had badly cut her heel there on Tuesday. She was able to do her homework at Bentley's without incident. We saw Azur and Asmar: The Princes' Quest, a beautiful film that cheers my heart and mind alike, for a second time at The Loft. And I was able to watch Cal beat Washington, with the help of a DVR, when I came home. None of these moments is significant. None of them are going to do much to change the course of world history or even my personal history. Yet they added up to a reminder that the world is not all doom and gloom.
