The Thing Itself
My bracket is already in danger of being busted -- maybe I should have opted for Eric's graduate school after all -- but here it is for your perusal.

more than you wanted to know about my relationship with college basketball

Kiyomi's mom, Emily, and her mom's partner, Jim, are down from Canada for their annual 2 month visit to Tucson. Jim LOVES March Madness (they were both PE teachers and coaches--why does this matter? I'm not REALLY sure).

SO, Jim always makes us...pick all our winners (what's the terminology? picking? set up...my...braket? I don't know...) (Incidentally, I am comfortable with brackets...so clean, so organized. But, I am not sure of the verbs I should use when discussing choices of winners...)

Kiyomi, a former Wildcat herself (Volleyball player back in the day), and Jim actually have a clue about this. Emily, sort of.

ME? I like to watch basketball...in a real hands-off kinda way. I know the names of about 4 college teams that are REALLY good...and, after watching one or two games I like to *pretend* that I can do the basketball talk. But other than that, I have to pick based on my thoughts about the team name or the state they come from. Sounds silly.

I actually won last year--I picked the highest number of winners--thus proving that my cosmic allowance of luck has been bestowed in all the wrong places.

Picking by mascot probably works better than my "educated guesses"! The fun is the randomness.

Glad to know that you aren't totally averse to my vice.

college basketball? That's all good.

But, if you tell me something frightening like you're a Lakers fan, I might be concerned.

your bracket

Well, I think basketball is somewhat boring, but Paul has been reminding me (alot) that we are now beginning March madness. Wonderful. He thinks that there are a couple of surprises in your bracket. It's gutsy to bet against Illinois. And, Utah beating Kentucky is a surprise. While it's never a good idea to bet against Coach K, he doesn't think Duke has it this year. So, Paul's pick of an upset is Syracuse over Duke. How's that? (I'll read your review of Butler and comment on that later....)

Re: your bracket

I didn't fare too well with my upset picks. Oh well. I find basketball endlessly fascinating to watch and fun but befuddling to play. I started relatively late. Baseball I learned early enough to have it feel natural. Basketball is always too much of a thinking game for me to be very good. But the fact that I'm always thinking instead of just doing makes it easier for me to think about it when I'm watching as a spectator. With the allergies I'm having today and my lingering illness-derived lethargy, though, I thank my lucky _____s that I have basketball to distract me right now. Tell Paul I can't pick Syracuse because I want them to win too badly. It's a rule my dad and I follow: always speak the worst of your team. Superstition, in other words.

Re: your bracket

Well, basketball shmasketball, I could give a hoot, but I can tell you that I sure can attest to why they call it March Madness. To quote the Bean, "Look inside my brain. What do you see?" Mmm Hmmmm.

more from Paul

From Paul: If there is going to be an upset today it will be Ohio state beating Florida. (I don't know what this means; ok, I do, but I don't care. I'm with Kim on schmacketball)

you're getting torn up charlie. thus far i'm 16 - 4... I went with a safer bracket this year tho. The only real upset I have picked is G.W. over georgia tech. But we already had our yearly 12-5 upset, so I'm probably s.o.l. with that pick.

Yeah, well, I could have gone "safe" but opted to gamble for something more impressive. At least I'm doing better than Dan Patrick.
