Reality Check
I'm more patriotic about American soccer than any other sport. I have a thing for underdogs. And the nationalistic urges that I developed as a Bicenntennial-obsessed child have to find expression somewhere. So I'm delighted to learn that our men's team has just been ranked sixth in the world -- yes, that's sixth alright -- by FIFA. But when the same rankings have a "weak" German team moving from twenty-first to eleventh, I have to wonder how useful they are. While I'd love for us to revenge the 2002 World Cup loss in 2006, I have a hard time believing that the Germans would regard themselves as underdogs in that context. Still, you never know.

HOORAY for US Soccer!

I was delighted to learn you have a deep-found appreciation for U.S. soccer. I too enjoy watching the likes of McBride, Mathis, Beasley, Donovan, and Co. rip their way though the CONACAF qualifying on their way to cracking the top-10 ranks! One of my graduation gifts/dreams/longshots is to head to Germany next year with some old soccer buddies and try to see if the US can avenge their exit in 2002 on German soil. Glad to know this detail about you.

Hopefully Mathis will be watching the World Cup on teevee with the rest of us.

Yep, I'm getting excited about 2006 too. I've always loved the World Cup, even if it does cost me sleep (2002 was brutal).

Glad to see you posting now and then. I always read with interest.

Well, having just watched the U.S. barely squeak by Honduras in a match which, while played in Giants Stadium, was a road match for the Americans, with the USA playing listlessly for much of the match, only to score two goals in the last few minutes to make their way into the Gold Cup finals ... I feel better now than I did in the 85th minute when Honduras was still up 1-0, but I don't feel like my country is the sixth best in the world.

Right. But I'm happy that they are getting better.
