When I Was 22: Postcard From Mendocino
My "archives" are filled with letters and postcards never sent. Looking at the one below, you might think it's because I was saved by prudent second-guessing. More likely, though, I simply never made it to the post office to buy a stamp:

I shudder to think what my best friend from high school would have thought of this button-pushing missive. The son of a moderate Republican who eventually moved to the right and ran for Congress, he walked the straight and narrow with few stumbles. By the time I wrote this postcard, by contrast, I had long since departed from the path to Southern Maryland respectability.

This is SO FUNNY. I'm LAUGHING. You never showed this to me. Had you, the deal would have been sealed and you'd be stuck with me for life, which you are anyway. Hehehe. Hey, the cemetery part is true (at least me laying on the graves) if I remember correctly. And wasn't Rob in the car with us in Santa Cruz during one of my many yelling "Eat my bloody cunt!" epidsodes? Poor guy. Actually, I think he kinda liked it (if I remember correctly again.)

You remember correctly on each count. I just found those B+W photos I took on that June, 1990 drive down to Santa Cruz -- via Pacifica -- with Rob. It seems shocking to me now that we drove the blue Malibu that far on more than one occasion.

was that a lightning bolt just past whizzing my ear?

Sad thing is, it wouldn't take nearly this much from me to shock the hell out of my best friend from high school. Just "shock the hell" might be enough. If it ever comes out that I'm, oh, intoxicated by my man Sterne's "and thens," or periodically intoxicated, well, I'll have clearly shown myself condemned far below the ninth circle of heaven. Whatever the hell that was.

Are there circles of Heaven? I thought only Hell was hierarchical! Sounds like you're already fallen in your best friend's eyes, proof that literature is the prototypical gateway drug.

Down with the hierarchy! No wait, down is still hierarchy... Shard the hierarchy, smash it, something.

And yes. Ironically enough, high school was the gateway to the gateway. Didion and all. Most fitting.

All lies! You were never a high school student! You were born fully formed and matriculated to college soon thereafter.
