what I really want to know

is how that new Bob Mould album is. I read something where he's planning on touring and playing some Hoooooooosker Du and Sugar songs. I just don't get the guy, though. He says some Husker Du stuff is ok but that Sugar is "the shit". Yeah, he said that. I like me some Sugar songs and everything, but jeez.

Re: what I really want to know

Well, if you're talking about a pop sensibility, I think you could make a better case for Sugar. There are some really good Sugar songs from that standpoint. And some similarly good ones on his first two post-Sugar albums. For me, though, the best things in his catalogue are Zen Arcade, New Day Rising, and his first solo album Workbook. Taken as an artistic whole, I think Workbook may be his best of all, in that it channels punk energy into acoustic territory and carves a new landscape there.

As for the new album, Body of Song, I like it. It does a better job of integrating his DJ electronica persona with his guitar hero persona. Sometimes he does that thing with his voice that Cher did on that late 90s hit. There are a couple of loud numbers. Overall, at this point I'd rank the new one below his last solo guitar record but far above Modulate. I'm sure he'll be good in concert, though. He always is. Again, however, I prefer him solo acoustic because his energy is less filtered.

Re: what I really want to know

I heard an interview with him this morning on KFOG and he played Sugar's If I Can't Change Your Mind and one of the new pieces. Maybe b/c it was the morning, maybe the fender stratocaster wasn't up to snuff, but the experience was a bit grating. For the record was a big Husker Du fan in the day. The live recording can be found here:
