Crisis
I have an overwhelming urge to have fried chicken all of a sudden. Not the KFC shit. Real fried chicken. Like my aunt used to make. But since she died in 1980, I'm going to have to find a substitute. I lit upon Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, which native Angelenos have talked about reverently, but there's obviously no Roscoe's here. So what do I do? Where do I go? If you have any insight on fried chicken-selling emporia here or in the Phoenix area or maybe even El Paso, please let me know. I'm desperate.

My grandma is pretty old, and one thing I know I'll miss is her cooking. Not just because, y'know, I like to eat, but because of all the associations I have with it-- the smells that would waft in as I was very young, sitting her living room playing with my toys waiting for dinner, the family get-togethers, and so on. I've asked her for the recipes for some of my favourites (she says she doesn't have recipes anymore; she just "knows" how to make the things) but I know even if I made it exactly right nothing could duplicate it. It is really more than just the food, it is the experience.

This made me almost teary-eyed with nostalgia.

Roscoe's headed off one of my first post-orientation/pre-class LA afternoons. MGD still lived in the frat. Flash still lived next door the the frats and liked to talk about my ties for belts. The boys took me for chicken and waffles. Then I went to Amoeba (with boys) and thought I would never get out alive. Then everybody thought it would be funny to try to watch Flash teach me how to play Grand Theft Auto. I knew my life would never be the same.

Well, perhaps someone can now instruct you in the sequel, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. There's a lot to learn, I'm told. . . :-)

oh god, last night I had the overwhelming urge for a fatty hamburger. I could have walked the half block to my local Carl's Jr., but what I really wanted was a hand-delivered In N' Out burger with melty cheese and grilled onions. I ate a vegan burrito instead.

I had some pretty top notch fried chicken once at Gus Balon's,
