Little, Purple, Different
Champagne grapes make the perfect "dessert" for tortoises, be they the sort called "turtles" or the sort called "tortoises." But I love them too. And so does Bean. It makes you realize how limited our store-bought eating grape selection has traditionally been. I know it doesn't make economic sense to ship most wine grapes out for that purpose, but I wouldn't mind trying different varieties in their unfermented state. My dad used to grow Delawares, which aren't wine grapes, but tasted substantially different from Concords. Maybe it's time for modified heirloom eating grapes, tended by robots instead of underpaid human beings.

Funny you'd mention this... I've tried a few different wine grapes fresh, and, well... they don't make for good eating. Too small, too tannic, too many seeds, too hard to transport. Still, it would be cool indeed if your local farmer's market made them more readily available to taste, because the usual standbys - Thompson Seedless, Flame, etc. - are pretty bland.

Do you like champagne grapes for eating? Are they even champagne grapes or do they just call them that?

They just call 'em that. Champagne is traditionally made from chardonnay, pinot meunier, and pinot noir, none of which would make for great eating. Champagne grapes are apparently Black Corinth, aka Zante Currant, which are normally used to make raisins. I don't think I've seen them in stores up here in Washington, though... hmm... I'll have to look harder next time I'm at Safeway; they're in season right now!

I figured. Oh well, I like champagne so much that I let myself be deceived by a martketing scheme! Trader Joe's should have them. Costco often does too.
