Recently, Bean has been migrating to the sofa when she wakes up in the middle of the night rather than wake us up. It's a practice that both her mom and I have indulged in during bouts of insomnia or, in my case, coughing. So there's ample precedent for the move.

Maybe she's hot. Maybe she needs to have her head at a different angle. Maybe it's the moans and mews of our cats. Maybe she just needs a change of place. We'd generally prefer that she go back to bed, of course, since it's an artificially darkened environment. But when she sleeps as well on the sofa as she has been this morning -- I spotted her when I got up to use the bathroom at 6am and she's still fast asleep -- she actually gets more rest than she would in her room, from which Thing One would surely have extracted her by now. And Thing Two gets to express the special sofa love that reminds us of his unique feline talents.

Isn't he the cutest companion? Smokey may rank number one in Bean's list of cats now, but Thing Two has shown plenty of staying power.

Maybe I'll take a nap on the sofa later in search of the same furry succor.
