(Outdated) Technology Question
Do any of you know what the easiest way for me to get files off of 5.25" diskettes onto a contemporary, USB-equipped Mac or Windows platform? I have a functional drive in my old 386. But the hard drive and the 3.5" floppy on the same machine have apparently given up the ghost. The computer lacks an ethernet port. It does have a 14400-baud modem, however. I could upload the files somewhere via dial-up, possibly, but I have no idea where I could do that using shell. The U of A no longer supports dial-up of any sort.

options?

I can think of two relatively easy options:

Install your 5.25 drive into your newer CPU. Do you have any slots open? You'll probably have to use the old cables when you install.

Or, copy your 5.25 files to a hard drive (you say your drive in your 386 is shot?) that you install in your old machine (if you need a specific drive, let me know, my Dad has all sorts of weird computer parts in his garage). Then install that drive in your newer machine.

Re: options?

We have a slot in the Windows machine. I've never done that before. Could you help?

The second option won't work because the hard-drive controller is what's not working.

Re: options?

Yes, definitely. Open your old 386 case and see what's inside (dust, cat hair...oh! floppy drive!). You might try vacuuming things out a bit before install the process begins, might make it easier.

What time is good for you? I’m away this weekend, Rocky Point, and I have a bridal shower in Friday, early evening. However, I just talked to arsemuffin and he’s available to do it as well (I’d probably bring him with me, anyway, since the switch might require fiddling with the BIOS). His cell phone number is the same as mine, just switch out the last number, 0, for a 4.

Re: options?

No rush. I can wait until you get back and have time. Thanks so much!

Re: options?

So welcome. I'll call or email on Monday to arrange a time. If it slips my mind and you don't hear from me, message me. I've been known to forget things (frequently).

Yes, I know

But I was sworn to secrecy.

Re: Yes, I know

You too! It's a conspiracy. I trust that you're glad to be home and glad to have been gone.
