Sonic Youth - De File
Does Collecting Make You Feel Dirty?
Sonic Youth
I love the fact that, when I put on a Sonic Youth album, my daughter immediately gravitates to her art workshop and starts work on a project. Like me, she hears their perpetually disintegrating and rebuilding wall of sound as an injunction to go into the inner space where productivity has nothing to do with the perfect.

That's because she has an androgynous mind.

just keep her away from the eagles charlie...

I actually had a moment of absurdity here in China that made me recall your literary analysis class. I was sitting out at a table along a Beijing bar street, drinking Tsing Tao beer and chatting with a Frenchman, when I heard a familiar melody drifting through the open door of an adjacent bar.

"Hotel California" was being performed by a Chinese band.

I ended up hearing the damn song 3 more times that night. All from different bands. And then in the cab on the way home.

I will add your daughter to my prayers tonight:

"And please give Bean the strength to resist her father's love of the Eagles..."

This is an excellent evocation of the SY aesthetic. I will feel blessed yet again if one day my own sons are similarly inspired.

The trick is to play it as background when they're young. I used to play their albums on auto-repeat for hours while baby Skylar played.

Are you going to the New Pornographers show?

As an inducement to napping, I once played Phill Niblock's Guitar Too, For Four, a massive guitar drone piece, played in part by Thurston and Lee. Jennifer was horrified. I have tried introducing various favorites over time. There was a period of many months in which they insisted on Mike and Peggy Seeger's version of "She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain When She Comes" on endless repeat, which actually reflects their father's own listening habits.

I intend to. I kept an eye out for you at the Decemberists. You weren't there, were you? I had another great time.
