Thanks. Black widows fascinate me. Fear does that!

Black widows are harder to catch because they stay in their webs. But I eventually go it!

Oh, I know. Too much goop inside. Still, I try not to kill them, since they never leave their webs willingly. Brown recluses -- technically they are "violin spiders" here -- are the only ones I kill on sight, because they rove and are more of a threat.

yow, those are the scariest ones. I think of them every time I shake out my shoes before putting them on.

Thanks! It's funny how necessity -- in this case my camera's inability to focus in close and the impossibility of using flash to photograph something under/inside glass -- forces one to be more creative. My original goal was simply to document the darned spider, especially since it had such a perfect shape and large hourglass. But when that proved an unattainable end, I started experimenting.

I really hope you keep the temperamental old digital camera as long as possible.

I sometimes think it's funny when I find people do not all grow up learning to look for black widows and other critters in all kinds of inopportune places. There was a pinecone in the EGU office. Flash gleefully claimed it for his desk. Then a spider ran out of it and the boys screamed while tropicopolitan and I looked on with amusement waiting to see if they would do something more productive about it or just go on screaming. Maybe I'll just print the photo out and tape it to Flash's desk for laughs. Yay grad school.

But yes, this is a seriously kickass photograph.
