Thoughts From the Bagel Place
From Adrienne Rich, Diving Into the Wreck:
Translations

You show me the poems of some woman
my age, or younger
translated from your language

Certain words occur: enemy, oven, sorrow
enough to let me know
she's a woman of my time

obsessed

with Love, our subject:
we've trained it like ivy to our walls
baked it like bread in our ovens
worn it like lead on our ankles
watched it through binoculars as if
it were a helicopter
bringing food to our famine
or the satellite
of a hostile power

I begin to see that woman
doing things: stirring rice
ironing a skirt
typing a manuscript till dawn

trying to make a call
from a phonebooth

The phone rings unanswered
in a man's bedroom
she hears him telling someone else
Never mind. She'll get tired--
hears him telling her story to her sister

who becomes her enemy
and will in her own time
light her own way to sorrow

ignorant of the fact that this way of grief
is shared, unnecessary
and political

Wow. That's such a great poem. It seems so timely and perfectly elusive of so many things. So many. I haven't read that book in a long time. I need to go see if I can find it. I need another book to add to my pile next to the bed.

I really like that book. Today is our B of A field-trip! (Notice the forced joy in that exclamation point.)

FUCK ALL I need to get my hands on some Adrienne Rich. Wait a second...I live next door to that blonde chick with all the poetry...wait a second...aren't *I* the blonde chick with all the poetry?? Oh god SO CONFUSED NOW!

Really though, she's first on my list, thanks to that.

Well I do confess it is confusing :) But also I do love her and you're in luck! At least in part. My selected (_Fact of a Doorframe_) doesn't have all of _Diving into the Wreck_ but has a lot of it and much besides ("21 Love Poems"--oh my bleeding loving heart, you HAVE to read these, much besides). And a loan comes complete with a tale to requite yours of finding _Men in the Off Hours_.

House of Blonde UNITE! Our Mutual Library could totally take over the poetic world.

cbertsch, you already know I love Rich I believe, but I do love her. And I meant to say it well before but thanks for this. So much.
