Prison Reform
I wonder if Michel Foucault ever met Huey Newton. I wonder if they spent much time at the zoo:

-- Rainer Maria Rilke, 6.11.1902, Paris
Maybe we can only discern ourselves on the other side of the pane.

The Single Artificer of the World

WOW! Great shot. The number of little kid feet reflected in the pane makes me think it was perhaps taken at school, the "panther" outside? Or have you superimposed one photo on another?

In any case, I've thought for a number of years now that this apropos, aptly quoted poem, especially the final stanza, rebukes the unhappy way in which Heidegger distinguishes stones, beasts, and humans -- respectively, worldwithout, worldpoor, and worldmaking [-bildend]. Notice how the artificial impoverishment of the panther's vision -- a thousand bars of barbaric civilization -- cannot altogether circumvent his capacity to perceive-as-internalization a vision [ein Bild], i.e., to take world to heart.

Fled is that vision.

Re: The Single Artificer of the World

That's a straight shot, taken at the zoo yesterday during Skylar's class field trip, which my partner wrote about, amusingly, at kdotdammit.

And I totally agree about the Heidegger. One of the reasons why I'm left unsatisfied by his philosophy, especially in its pre-World War II form, is that I've read enough Rilke well enough to think that Heidegger is borrowing wholesale from the poet while also deflating his ideas of their suppleness and clarity.
