I'm glad that democracy is finally making headway in Iraq. Once everyone is wearing the same uniform, classes will cease to matter.

Re: shorts

Hi Charlie, I hope you're well and enjoy reading your blog. I'd be skeptical about such reporting, particularly in the wake of the discredited story about Iran passing legislation to color-code religious minorities. http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0525/dailyUpdate.html
Remember the false story about Saddam's minions dumping Kuwaiti babies out of their incubators? When bunches of corpses turn up regularly on the streets of Iraq--the New York Times ran an interesting three-article series addressing this last week--how does the writer trace this killing back to the leafletting of a group? And where is this group getting its take on shorts from? The Iranian soccer player in the new issue of ESPN The Magazine is wearing shorts. I doubt you intended to, but the above could be read to suggest that killing someone for wearing shorts represents democratic opinion in Iraq. Government-harbored death squads are probably a much bigger problem than any anti-shorts wearing brigade that may exist. Peace.

Re: shorts

For better or worse, I was trying to be ironic. I agree that it's hard to know what to think about the news coming out of both Iraq and Iran. Thanks for reading.

Re: shorts

Well, I may be passing through Arizona in November again. If you're in the Bay Area with time for lunch some time, give a call. Gotta go get me some Dwayne Wade shoes; those sneakers are fly.

Re: shorts

And so is he. Dirk and Wade makes for an interesting star line-up. Throw in Shaq and you have a series.

We were supposed to be there soon, but had to cancel. We'll be in November, though, so you should definitely write me -- cbertsch AT gmail DOT com -- in advance to make plans.

Hang in there!
