Does Collecting Make You Feel Dirty?
When you're feeling down, there's nothing like a half hour dicing mesquite branches with a loose-screwed, dull-edged set of loppers to brighten your mood. The best part is making the scissors motion while stabbing them brutally into the big green trash can in an effort to make the cuttings actually fit within it. It's like acting out that scene in "Hotel California" with the mythological Green Man standing in for the beast.

i've told you this before, but i really want to emphasize this point: the chinese absolutely *love* hotel california. i hear it *everywhere.* there is a man who works at the internet cafe and sometimes brings his guitar in to practice. somehow (probably due to me being a lanky white man with wilful hair) he sensed that i play and asked me to while i was emailing some friends. the next time i came in, he asked me to teach him how to play 'hotel california' -- even gave me the sheet music.

in my broken chinese i told him i was far too busy. i may have shot myself in the head before he was able to play it...

so even though all your friends in the states may think you're a douchebag for liking the eagles, you have the unflinching support of 1.3 billion folks on the other side of the world -- sans me, of course.

The juxtaposition of Hotel California and Bridge Over Troubled Water is almost too much to take...

At least, if the bridge is in Baja, the troubled water is a mirage.

Right on . . . you are deconstructing a natural construction. Like the opposite of the bower of bliss in the Faerie Queene. Hmmm . . . maybe it's not the beast you're taming.

Good point. Did I ever tell the story of my Faerie Queene deficiency? I can't understand a word of it.
