The Language of Influence
While going through the archives of William Gibson's blog this morning, presently devoted to the presentation of work in progress, I found this very amusing entry I'd previously overlooked:
Friday, September 09, 2005 posted 11:15 PM

I was looking through a list of women's names today, Dutch, all prior to the year 1100:

Clodauuiua
Clotrada
Crapahildis
Cunegundis

Once you see the name Crapahildis it sort of sticks with you, doesn't it? And think of all the men who cried out "Clodauuiua!" with utmost longing.
I can't help but think of the song "Glitter and Be Gay" from Leonard Bernstein's Candide.

That's exactly what I thought about as well. I love Candide. I have sung (parts) of that role. CB, you haven't lived until you have heard that aria sung poorly. I mean not so much off key but off the beat. The piece is a dance and singers forget it. Come to think of it off key was part of that as well. Yay!

Side note: When we finished _Paradise Lost_ in Epic class, the whole leaving the garden "hand in hand" (which is pervasive throughout the epic and the only thing that "sin" doesn't destroy) I thought of "Make our Gardens Grow" or the Finale.
