I LOVE that guy. I see him riding his bike on Campbell all the time. He's a total Tucson Icon.

I know. That's why I wanted him in the photo.

a ha!

i'm still disappointed at the closure of the catalina theatre. i saw some good movies there, and i liked it in spite of or maybe because of its being outdated.

Me too. The loss of any movie theater is a mino tragedy in my world. Nice rain today, though.

I think I want to be one now! My German grandfather ran a camera store. Both my parents took a lot of photos on family vacations. I got my first camera at 6, my first 35mm at 11, saved money and purchased my first SLR at 14. So I guess it's pretty deeply ingrained. I just never had the resources to experiment affordably before the digital era. Now that I can play around without bankrupting myself, my abstract longings are becoming easier to realize. My next goal is to get a digital camera that's more advanced than the 2002 model I've been using thus far. Anyway, thanks for asking. It's something I care about a lot, though most people don't seem to register that fact, despite the photos I put up here.

Photography is awesome!**

For your next digital camera, you should pick up a digital SLR if you can. They're typically up in the $500-$1,000 range, but they're well worth it. My boyfriend will be buying one shortly. He's a photography major and his film SLR broke over the summer :(

I loved photography in high school... They cut the program right before my senior year, though, so I never got to do a portfolio. It's not really my calling, anyway. But it sure was a fun class.

I'll link in one of my favorite pics that I took this summer for photojournalism.

Re: Photography is awesome!**

I'm torn on the digital SLR idea. Even if I could afford it -- I'm not sure about that -- I fear that the added weight and bulk would limit my ability to experiment and, more importantly, take candid shots of my daughter and others. I've gotten so used to not looking through the viewfinder, like Gary Winograd with his Leica, that the SLR might set me back. I'm thinking about a high-end fixed-lens camera. Maybe one of those Panasonic's with the Leica lenses. I mean, I want a digital SLR too, but I think getting a replacement for my current super-portable Olympus C-50 is a higher priority.

Well, the digital SLR's can be set to auto-focus and auto-expose, so that makes life simpler ;) But you're right about the weight/enormity of the camera. You have to already have it ready. It's hard to use for candid shots.

That photo was done for a fashion shot assignment. I took the photojournalism summer course, so it was really condensed. He just gave us category assignments, not article-based assignments.

Here's another pic that I took during that course, only this one I couldn't turn in for anything. I was just standing at the right place at the right time.

Cool. Nice blurring of the line between background and foreground.

I want a camera I can bring anywhere and use for candids but still get good shots with. I'm doing OK with my 2002 model -- it is 5 megapixels, at least -- so I figure a new one with manual focus adjustment and better macro focusing will be a big improvement without robbing me of my newfound agility with the camera.

Oh, and that's a cool photo. What was the backstory for the shot?
