1968 PO Firebird 400... yow.

You want to have a good time burning twenty gallons of gas? Take that out on the highway in the middle of the night. Yeehaw. Those things make you feel like you're in a spaceship.

The year of my birth. I want to go back to that womb and burn the rest of my fuel. . .

::sighing::

The first set of tires, I'd destroy utterly in one continous nitrous fueled burnout.

Yes!

(BTW, you replied to my comment so rapidly that I couldn't fix the missing tag: speed must be on your mind.)

Nice! From back in the day when Pontiac actually did build excitement.

Next weekend I'll be at the Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival in Wisconsin, which is held at a closed circuit 4 mile long track (called Road America) just outside of town. No doubt: will see one of these in full race trim, not doing the quarter mile, nor simply going in circles, nooooo! Up and down hills, both left turns and right turns! (Real racers turn in both directions). Yep, a lot of petrol will be burned.

Maybe the "wide track" matters just a teeny bit?

Sure couldn't hurt!

But were they any wider than Chevys? Methinks not.

BLASPHEMER!!! (er, I think you are correct)

I've always wondered. Still, Pontiac did make it seem like there was a meaningful difference.

And that's just exactly what their ad agency was hoping for! In theory there was an element of value to having a "wide track" no matter what make of car you were talking about if you were concerned about stability in cornering. Most owners however only wanted straight-line performance though.

Incidently: I passed through Pontiac Michigan, home of this namesake car at 6:00PM one weekday last month. Turned on Widetrack Drive which is a loop that encircles the town and connects to Woodward Avenue, the road which saw plenty of "Test and Tune" action of this model by both factory agents and subsequent young owners.

The remarkable thing was that I was the entire rush hour, in my 277K miles/21 years old Volvo. Kinda depressing, but not enough so to prompt me to buy a Pontiac.

Literally, it's a 1968 Firebird 400 with the Ram Air set-up. Metaphorically, well, that's another matter. . . :-)

Thanks for stopping by.
