Does Collecting Make You Feel Dirty?

LJ Today
I can see why the folks at LJ felt obligated to restructure their menus. The number of pull downs had gotten out of control. And I don't have any major complaints about the way Horizon works so far. But do I really need to see that eye patch-wearing icon next to my user name? Or go to make changes to an entry and find that I'm editing the "Captain's Log"? I mean, what the fuck? If I wanted to play pirate I'd get that game my daughter keeps asking about or start cracking DVDs.

Just in case this isn't a joke post ... I'm irony-impaired, and I can't see the stuff you're talking about re: eyepatchs etc. if I just make a comment ... today is "Talk Like a Pirate Day," which may explain the changes.

Oh, they're just customizing the interface now, the way Google redoes their home page for holidays. But it annoys me intensely for some reason. Why do I have to play along with this pirate stuff?

You're supposed to conclude your complaint by saying "ARRRR!"

It amuses me greatly that you're kinder to a fake holiday than Christmas.

Talk Like a Pirate Day doesn't require me to pretend to be nice.

Plus, I've had an affinity for talking like a pirate since the first time I read S. Clay Wilson's tales of the high seas. Nothing like Cap'n Pissgums saying "Sit on me face, matey!" to get the old blood stirring, especially when Ruby the Dyke is on the horizon. Over the gums and into the tum, yummy yum yum indeed.

I like it!

But I think the new interface is ugly as hell and chose to stick with the old one.

It is ugly. But I do think it streamlines the use of many features. I've got nothing against Talk Like a Pirate Day per se. What bugs me is being forced to participate.

I'll have to take your word on that. It was so unwieldy that I didn't use it long enough to become familiar with any benefits. This is probably just because I'm so busy that my spend-time-on-livejournal time is limited and I would prefer to spend it reading my friends' entries, rather than dealing with figuring out a new interface, especially one that irritated me initially by being so unattractive.

You're not being forced to participate, you're just being exposed to livejournal's participation, is how I see it. But I talked like a pirate often throughout the day, so it's not surprising my perspective is more forgiving of their indulgence. :)

When I saw the "Captain's Log" thing I thought I was in the wrong LJ. I don't like crap like that being done if it's not me. I don't think it's fun or funny.

I'm 100% behind you. It's like making someone celebrate Christmas or Easter, even if Talk Like a Pirate day is an "ironic" holiday.

Maybe that's also why the local sports radio kept on with the pirate stuff all afternoon. I certainly didn't find it very funny and kept waiting for the "segment" to end until I finally just turned the radio off.

That sounds especially annoying.

I'm not sure. I'll ask Kim tomorrow and reply again to this comment. I suspect it's Saturday, though.
