Concert Tonight: Califone @ Plush
I'll be at Plush tonight to see Califone, the subject of my next Tikkun feature -- already written, but yet to appear -- and a band worthy of your attention if catchphrases like "ambient Americana", "bluesy neo-Krautrock" or "postmodern traditionalist" excite your curiosity. They're supposed to go a little after 11pm. I hope to see you there.

Do you have an opinion of Jerry Saltz's writing?

No. Why do you ask?

I'm just asking because he was here on campus last week. That's all...

Oh. I haven't read enough to have an opinion worth declaring. What did you think?

I liked much of what he said but, the one thing that struck me as important and, something I have conflict with is, maintaining ones critical distance from artists one writes about. He said he's friendly with many artists but, he doesn't talk to them about their work. I do talk to some artists about their work but, only after I have come to the conclusion I want to write about it. He also mentioned his lack of real power in influencing an artists career, which I can understand although, I also know many artists that would feel anointed if he wrote about their work. In that sense, Bonnie Clearwater, Director and curator of the MoCA (N. Miami), often mentions how she recognized this or that artist in many cases before national or international recognition arrived. Locals say she's full of it but, she has done that on more than a couple of occasions.

As a live speaker he was very lively and the student really got into his "converation" with laughter and such but, before my class started only one of them asked any questions and even that one was with hesitation.

I do like some of what he writes and, he often writes about the things that are still lacking in the art world... more women and artists of color.
