Glazing the Clutch
Some things click -- my right knee for instance, loud enough so others can hear it -- and others do not. Lately, I seem to be ending up in social situations where the mesh of gears doesn't ever seem to happen smoothly. Since I don't go out much these days, this experience of not-clicking is more frustrating than it otherwise might be. I badly desire some comradely Gleichschaltung, but what I get instead is awkward pauses, the checking of watches, and a voice in my head saying, "Why don't you get the hell out of here and go home where you can accomplish something?" Maybe it's time to seek out a new context for companionship.

You should have come out with us instead. We're rarely awkward!

True. It's not about individuals, really. It's more what happens when larger groups are in play. In the case of last night's awkwardness, mutual exhaustion and the absence of the right venue were also factors.

BTW, Michigan is now ranked second. November 18th could be one for the ages.

where is this at? I mean, where have you been seeking the companionship??

Oh, I just meant in circles of friends and acquaintances, doing the sort of thing I've been doing for a while here in Tucson.

my advice

Extinguish roles. Then the pauses are no longer awkward.

(at least not for you)

Re: my advice

Interesting. I'm not sure I fully understand, though. You mean, stop playing whatever role I'm wont to play?

Re: my advice

pauses become awkward when people feel a need to fill them up. people feel a need to fill them up because we have been trained (and have trained ourselves!) to do so in social situations. but when you step away and say you're only going to say things when you have something to say, you short circuit all that, and the pauses are no longer awkward.

(and you oftentimes end up with more to say)

this only goes so far, though, as silence will still make others feel awkward, unless the group is really comfortable with each other. but it's a neat trick and has a way of putting you in the driver's seat with no worries in regards to destination. and then you're not so anxious that you can't comment on the scenery...

Not Necessarily Germane

I've never heard this word -- Gleichschaltung -- used in anything other than a negative context (I mean, of course, after the Nazis were ousted). Are you being ironic or does the term have a neutral valence?

Incidentally, J. L. Austin used it to characterize the will, among philosophers, to create tidy dichotomies in situations in which the field was considerably more complicated and multiform.

Re: Not Necessarily Germane

Oh, it just means "synchronization." You use it when talking about machinery with gears. I'm aware of the connotations, naturally, which is why I picked it for its odd effect. But I'm not sure why I wanted to have an odd effect!

I think Julian Boyd once told me that. He was always quoting Austin. It's a nice use of the term, especially in light of those associations with fascism.

(Special treat still pending. Once I get the scanner working again.)
