The Happiness of Help
The "check engine" light came on in our 2003 Passat yesterday morning. Given the extremely busy nature of our week and the fact that it was also the most special day of the year, we were dismayed. Luckily, nothing bad happened to the car the rest of the day. And today, the awesome benlinus made good on a promise he'd made me a while ago and brought his VAG-COM set-up over after work and was able A) to confirm my suspicion that the problem was sparkplug-related and therefore not something to worry about; B) to inform me of another minor problem with the A/C unit that we can attend to later; and C) clear out all the error codes from the car's computer and determine that they didn't simply reappear when we turned the car back on. So if you run into him at any point over the next week or so, please remember to think fondly of his helpful ways. He made our day and week a lot less difficult than they otherwise would have been.

My check engine light has been on for 6 months. I hope it's just a computer chip problem.

Alas, your car uses a different set-up. benlinus is a VW man. It could just mean you need a tune-up.

Maybe you should go see Short Bus, as per Kim's recommendation. Sounds like it might give you just the tune-up you need!
