Around the Bloc
When I first heard Bloc Party's Silent Alarm last year, I was overwhelmed with delight. And then, after I'd played the record to death for a few months, I started wondering whether I'd fallen too fast and too hard. Even though I continued to love what I was hearing, I began to suspect that I'd been duped. Surely, something that pleased me so easily from the get-go would eventually grow tired. So I put the album aside and only listened to tracks from it when they would come on in shuffle mode. Recently, however, I've had an intense resurgence of that initial head-over-heels feeling. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Silent Alarm is perfect music for running or biking and therefore an ideal companion for my recent forays into the land of semi-fitness. Whatever the reason, though, it's clear this time around, as I dally with my not-so-old flame, that I'm never going to stop loving this record and, what is more, that it actually sounds a lot better to me now than it did eighteen months ago. That may be true of other favorites from the past few, Pitchfork-colored years, such as the debut albums from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Wolf Parade, which have also been sounding great to me of late. But Silent Alarm is presently at the top of the list.

Me, too ...

That's funny -- all three of those albums have also been rotating heavily on my iPod of late. I went through months of listening to them over and over last year -- along with MM's The Lonesome Crowded West, which I had somehow overlooked until then -- and put them away until recently.

I think Wolf Parade is probably my favorite of the three, but the other two are right up there.

Around this time last year, I also picked up that The Clientele record on your recommendation, and it's back in the mix again. That took me longer to get into, but once I did, I really liked it.

Re: Me, too ...

I like the Clientele record a lot too. But it's been more of steady affection with that one. With Bloc Party in particular, I loved it so much at first that I was sure I'd end up not liking it so much. Hasn't happened, though. Mouse on Mars has been in heavy iPod rotation for me as well. I hadn't really assimilated their major-label debut when it came out because of moving here and then the stress of everything being new and getting sick and then 9/11. Since I loved Good News For People Who Love Bad News in 2004 and still loved it in 2005, I figured I should go back to the previous album, which is really outstanding as well. So is The Lonesome Crowded West, of course, though I played that to death back in the Bay Area, before I became a parent.

More broadly, I really want to write something more weighty about the oddness of music listening these days, where records get old so quickly, but are then subject to revivals within a year or less. It's so strange, but also very intriguing.

I had the exact same reaction to that album, and am having the exact same rennaissance. I love running to Bloc Party. Oh and the remixes are great. I have some new ones I downloaded that I'll give you if you want.

how do you feel about the arcade fire's "funeral". i def rate it above "silence alarm".

Oh, I like Funeral, but I've come to prefer Silent Alarm. Given my choice of Canadian indie bands, I'd take Wolf Parade and Broken Social Scene first. But I do like Funeral.
