How'd it go? I heard about the English-only measure. :(

I was actually being silly, referring to my sadness at not getting e-mails from the RNC anymore. And serious, because I am sort of depressed about life. But there's plenty of reason to be depressed in Arizona, despite the Democrats' unprecedent success. All the anti-immigrant propositions passed in landslides, which is terrible. The anti-gay marriage/anti-domestic partnership proposition was still too close to call. In thinking about why I wrote that, as I write this, I realize, though, that I'm depressed to be happy that I'm not more depressed, from a political standpoint, if that makes any sense. Hmmm. Maybe there's something more to tease out of that knot. . .

I hate it when I finally eat the treat and it's gone.

bizarre

There's nothing people won't scapegoat onto Mexicans down here. But the 107... IS UNBELIEVABLE! It is not going to pass. Gay Marriage bans went through in EVERY SINGLE STATE where they were put on the ballot except Arizona. And the super odd thing is... Many of the ballot initiatives, including 107 were put on the ballot as wedge initiatives to get the Right Wing out. They came out, voted for Kyl, flipped two (2) seats to the Democrats, and then didn't put through 107... But they DID vote for the "first step toward jack-booted government mandated veganism!" Proposition 204.

Weird. weird. weird.

Re: bizarre

It's a strange state that showed its storied libertarian underbelly, weak spots and all, after an era in which the national Republican Party's platform tended to prevail. But there have been moments in recent memory of similar oddness. The medical marijuana bill that passed was surely one of those. In general, Arizonans are reluctant to shell out for government that goes beyond the bare, Hobbesian minimum. If they turn on illegal immigrants, it's at least in part because they can't see why Mexicans should get services they deny themselves or at least imagine themselves denying themselves.

Re: bizarre

ha ha ha ha!

We like to go it alone... of course, I don't mind charging the Gubmint $500,000 for the difficult task of putting a video camera and solar panel on top of an aluminum pole and setting it in concrete.
