2001: An Odyssey
The Bean is home sick today. And she's watching PBS. It brings back memories. Good ones, too, though my strongest impression of our first two years here is one of perpetual crisis and further impending menace. I can't wait for Teletubbies. I think I'll watch that one the sofa with her.

Jet is home today, too. Stomach virus. :(

Skylar had an upset stomach yesterday. Today she has that plus congestion and coughing. I hope hers and Jet's clear up before the holiday is upon us.

When I called Jet in sick yesterday (he had been coughing and complaining about upset stomach late on Wednesday, then woke up to throw up twice in the middle of the night) the teacher I talked to said there is a stomach virus going around but it is only a 2-day one. Jet is already mostly better today (still little appetite). What concerns me is the teacher said *she* had gotten it, too. Jim and I don't usually get whatever Jet picks up at school -- I think the strains are too mild -- but if this one is spreading to adults.... Bah!

It's odd to have a virus that attacks both stomach and respiratory system, though neither one with great force. I sort of feel like I might be getting it, but it's not strong. And Kim reports similar feelings.

I'm sorry she's sick, but I bet a morning with Po will do a world of good. Enjoy!

A world of good for me, anyway!

I remember how enjoyable staying home sick was when I was a child. It meant I got to spend the day at my grandmother's house where she had the Disney channel (what a luxury!) and would dote on me. She also made homemade cough syrup with whiskey in it, which has always worked far better than anything else for me. It was a recipe from a local doctor here in the 1940s.

Alcohol works great for that in most people. Given her mother's odd response to alcohol, though, I probably wouldn't go that route with her. She's happy and I'm having great PBS thoughts, so all is pretty much copasetic.

Oh, sorry. I was thinking of Jack Kerouac. I don't think I saw the movie. Sorry!

when i was a kid and had an upset stomach, my grandma would give me a bit of peppermint schnapps in water. whee!

my grandmother's cough syrup was 3 tablespoons warm/hot water, 2 tablespoons honey, 1 tablespoon whiskey. i still use it to this day if i'm coughing a lot at night.

teletubbies makes for some very interesting viewing--almost disturbing at moments. but, i'm wondering if this is the reverse of the phenomenon you mentioned about sesame street, where perception at the younger age is not quite developed enough to appreciate it. maybe i'm too old to see teletubbies without feeling slightly uneasy. or maybe this points to some particular aspect of my plethora of neuroses i haven't gotten around to facing yet . . .
