The only good thing about last week's astonishingly depressing Cal loss to Arizona is that I'm less stressed about this evening's trip to the Coliseum. All season I've been dreading the prospect of USC dashing our Rose Bowl hopes. Now that the day is upon us, though, I'm not so tense. I suspect the Trojans will win. But last week's black-and-white-striped debacle in Tucson has actually made me slightly more hopeful. The Bears will be looking to redeem themselves instead of stressing out over losing their lead in the Pac-10 and the dim, but still alluring prospect of making the BCS championship game. I also think that my pledge to not root for Michigan, which I graciously made to siyeh, even though I am, as I told her, drawn to blue and gold even when the gold is called "maize" and also have a fondness for all mustelids, is taking up so much of my energy that I don't have the capacity to worry myself into a frenzy. Alright. Here goes: "Go teams whose mascots start with the letter 'B'!

Roses could still be headed your way

It might be a long shot, but if USC wins tonight and jumps in the BCS, Cal could have an outside shot at the Rose Bowl. Yeah, it'd be a hell of slim shot, but it could happen, as USC would be headed to the BCS Championship Game. Then Cal would need some luck (like a couple top-10 teams losing a 2nd game) and maybe they win the at-large bid to Pasadena. I don't know. I'm all excited though, because Cats just beat Oregon at Autzen for the first time in 20 years! Hooray winning season (and sorry for the pain that such winning season caused your Bears).

Re: Roses could still be headed your way

True enough. But, having already been screwed out of the Rose Bowl by Texas two years ago when we clearly did deserve it, I'm not going to get my hopes up. Let's hope the Cats keep it up against the Sun Devils. A bowl would be the prize!

It took me 2.5 years, but I now consider myself a UofA Wildcat partisan. The Cats' two last football games have given me elation, and rekindled my belief in redemption, and watching the Stoopses makes me want to be home shouting at my brothers like old times.

And now in basketball, I'm excited for two or three new "sulking star" narratives from the local media. Oh that Lute, such a non-cursing disciplinarian!

Maybe it's because I stayed in the Pac-10, but I haven't found it easy to retain my former rooting interest. I'll pull for the Cats against non-Pac-10 teams in basketball and football, but they aren't always my second favorite, even within the conference. I'm enough of a University of California über alles man to prefer UCLA under certain circumstances. And I do like a clear underdog, which means that I sometimes root for a Washington or Oregon State in basketball.
