Cotton grows in some of the most unexpected places in this country. I guess it shouldn't be unexpected but, I don't think cotton growing is a large agricultural crop anymore.

And, what's up with all the new icons? You trying to be the stylemaster, huh? ;-)

I thought of you when I was composing the sequence from which this image comes. I don't have a macro lens -- or a very able camera -- so I couldn't go for a close-up. The way the burst-open pods look, though, reminded me of some of your images.

The cotton industry in Southern Arizona was once a very big deal. There are still lots of fields planted. They're very impressive at this time of year, which is when they do the harvest. But the encroachment of suburban sprawl from Tucson north and, more dramatically, Phoenix south, is changing the landscape rapidly. It's like what happened in Southern California after World War II, when the citrus groves were gradually "disappeared." The area where I took that photo -- I was heading back from the Phoenix area -- is near several historical African-American communities founded when the cotton workers headed west from the Deep South. Most of the young people left over the past two generations, the majority ending up in Phoenix, which is why that city has a more noticeable African-American population than largely white and brown Tucson.

Oh, and as for the LJ icons, I try to change mine very few months. I'm not sure I like this one. I'm still fishing around for something good. Kim thinks it's disturbing, which kind of pleases me, but it is a little eery.

Thanks. I tried to take a shortcut yesterday that was actually long, because I hit a dirt road. But I got a good sunset as recompense. Those cotton fields are something. That was near Coolidge, BTW.

Yes, it reminds me of that "opiate for the masses" portion of The Wizard of Oz. The color balance between the bottom and top halves is the main reason. Cool and warm. I got lucky, because the camera has no manual exposure controls. I just try to lock the exposure and focus I want and hope that they don't get lost. Most of the time they do, unfortunately. But not this time.
