I Can Bearly Stand It
I'm watching Cal play Texas A&M in football tonight, in the Holiday Bowl. And I'm watching the Cal men play Arizona in basketball. Back and forth, back and forth: it's overwhelming. But I'm not going to complain. Right now we're up 14-7 on the Aggies and two points on the Wildcats. Despite my innate pessimism, I'm feeling a little bullish on the Bears.

The Bears played great! And the coach's disappointment at that last touchdown was kind of touching--showed his sportsmanship and respect (though his players had other ideas).

I was thinking of you throughout. I'm very sports-minded, for better or -- more likely -- worse and get rather sentimental about the college sort in particular. I did think Cal played well. That last touchdown was odd. Tedford is famous for not running up the score, so his consternation was genuine. Having also watched Cal get hammered by the Arizona Wildcats' men's team in basketball, though, I think it's safe to say that A&M is much better in that sport this year. Did you see the ad for A&M that ran during the game, the one that focused on Robert Gates's becoming Secretary of Defense? It was highly unusual, as college-promotional ads go.
