And Fox is using a Bob Mould song to promote their new season of shows. I'm fine with that. People who have worked as hard as he has deserve a little financial security. As Joe Strummer once said, hearing a good song on a commercial can give you a lift. It may not be ideologically pure, but so what?

God bless Joe Strummer ... he deserved to get paid, as does Bob Mould. But if a commercial gives you a lift, you need to rethink your priorities. I'm not saying I'm immune, but at least I spank myself after the fact. Sadly, I'm part of an ever-smaller minority on this one ... soon I'll be yelling at those kids to get off of my lawn. Which will be filmed for a commercial. With "Turn on the News" as the soundtrack.

My partner no doubt agrees with you. But I have to confess that Strummer's argument won me over. It depends on the context, whether I'm annoyed or pleased. Usually it's the former. One of the first "alternative" songs to get the commercial treatment was Blur's "Song 2," which appeared in several spots. I loved it in the one for Starship Troopers, but not the one for Intel. Stereolab and Spiritualized in ads for the new VW bug worked for me. The songs used in Hummer ads did not. As for my priorities, well, my biggest one is to be honest about my own pleasure and pain. So I think I'm doing OK on that score, even if I open myself up to public humiliation as a consequence.

I'm afraid you don't have to worry about public humiliation ... most people agree with you.

I've mentioned this before, that Lou Reed made an argument once, after he'd done an ad for Honda bikes, that the money he made from that commercial paid for his next album, so if we liked his next album, shut the fuck up. He didn't even ride Hondas ...

You're my public! I remember that Lou Reed comment. And the commercial, which I liked the first ten times I saw it and then grew tired of. That was the 80s, for goodness sakes.

I have heard that often times when a song suddenly "appears" on a commercial or suddenly re-emerges as a "Classic Track", the reason is that the artist or often, the artist's inheritors have finally broken down and sold the song to one of those companies that owns and controls the rights to many, many songs. Usually, the sale is for not so much... These companies, in turn, own radio stations and such. And the songs which have been languishing in no man's land suddenly become butterflies of glorious over-playage. Because they don't have to pay the artists, but rather now pay themselves for the rights. In other words, most radio stations only play what they own. It's almost as if the entire point of the music industry is to fuck over the people that make it possible.

You are probably right. I have no doubt. And I am pleased that Bob Mould is getting doughball for his music. I just wouldn't be surprised to hear that he never made a penny from the song, and one day a guy came up to him and said, "I'll give you $5000 for it," and he said, "Awesome!" and then that same guy sold a performance right to the commercial people for $200,000... I mean, it happens all the time. It's like music isn't worth anything until some asshole owns it. Like the people who wanted to use it were thinking, "We could pay $10,000 to the artist, OR we could wait twelve years and pay $300,000 to some fucking slimeball prick..." Like, people go out of their way to fuck over musicians. And they do! The whole history of music is that story told over and over again.

I agree. The thing with Bob is that he got screwed by SST and Virgin so badly that, when he switched over to Rykodisc, he made sure to get a much better deal. Or so he has said in interviews.

I'm assuming the song is "See a Little Light"? That's the only one I've ever heard played on a corporation-owned radio station.

Don't know if you've lapped at the vomit trough that is John Mellencamp's "This is Our Country" playing on Sunday Night Football. It's so bad it's almost funny.

I'll be stoked if Husker Du's "Bricklayer" ends up being the soundtrack for a commercial, preferably for some sort of malt liquor (unless they can't advertise for that on TV any more, seems like it's been ages since Schlitz malt liquor or King Cobra were on the tube). Then again, I'm not sure it clocks in at even 29 seconds.

The most bizarre commercial soundtrack I've heard to date (other than Thee Headcoats, er, The Sonics' "Have Love, Will Travel" used to sell Range Rover) is the current Dell commercial with the 13th Floor Elevators. What next, The Mentors hawking Kotex? (smacks forehead while the "oops" music from the Price is Right plays)

No, it's a later song. The one that goes, "Starlight. . ." I like it. I actually like most of his solo stuff a good deal. Having seen him live so much helps.

I saw that Dell ad too. Boy, that was nutty.

Then there are the bands, like Of Montreal, that are writing new versions of their own songs for commercials. It's so crass that it sort of works.

No Pavement yet. But no one can hold out forever.
