I Want This, Even Though I Hate Myself For Wanting It
I'm so tense -- the respirator is about to be removed -- that I've just been sorting piles in the garage and refreshing the page for the San Francisco Chronicle's live blogging from Macworld. How pathetic is that? Worse still, despite the looming crisis of Nachträglichkeit and the fact that I'm pretty sure Steve Jobs is not a pleasant person to be around, I'm captivated by his performance, even when it's relayed secondhand. The fact that he can get the heads of Google and Yahoo on stage together to celebrate his latest product is kind of gross, further confirmation that Apple has become about as alternative as, well, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and nevertheless fuel for the fires of desire. I do want a phone that does everything. I do. I do.

Oh, I know. That last, "I want, I want," was tongue-in-cheek. The difference, though, is that those already on the Apple bandwagon, like me, want everything to integrate seamlessly across their Appledom. That's why I'd get an iPhone over the T-Mobile, if I had to choose. But since we're on Sprint, neither one is going to happen anytime soon.

I've got this vicious head-cold that's rendering me sort of obtuse (and will probably keep me away from the Malkmus concert tonight, unfortunately), so I don't know what that aside in the first sentence indicates. But I just read through your recent posts and wanted to say that I hope everything works out for you and yours.

Actually, I wanted to say something less trite and somehow more reassuring or helpful than that, but I guess that'll have to do.

I wanted it, I did, I did, and I got it for xmas. Of course, I'm not a Mac person, and what I got was a Treo, but I understand the impulse, I do, I do. Everyday we find something new to do with it ... right now it's the Kinoma 4 EX player, which makes it easy to experience a vast amount of Internet media ... the experience part isn't new, the easy part is. Then I see that Sling Media is going to come out with a Palm OS version of the Slingbox thingie, so I'll be able to control/watch my TV on my phone wherever I am ... like I say, I understand the impulse.

It's your entries that have stoked my desire, even more than Mr. Turtleneck!
