Par For the Course Is Sub-Par
Alright. So my personal and professional lives have been extremely stressful for some time. But there are positive developments nonetheless. I went to Urgent Care this evening because I've had a lingering sore throat, am flying across the country tomorrow and remember all too well what happened two winters ago when I let a sore throat linger, because I had no fever, and ended up with an abscess and two months of hell to go along with it. Whenever I go to the doctor, even if I think I'm being a hypochondriac, I end up testing positive for something or other. This time, though, was different. My throat is still sore, but I don't seem to have strep throat -- they're doing the more accurate culture just in case. Not only that, when the physician listened to my lungs, he said they sounded wonderful. I don't think that has ever happened to me before. Oh, and I also had the pleasure today of discovering, during this week's epic games of one-on-one basketball at the JCC, that the deep-breathing exercises and pushups I've been doing with increasing regularity have greatly improved my defense and rebounding. I'm so awash with healthy goodness that I can even read William S. Burroughs without feeling like I've contracted a sexually insatiable parasite. Go me!

I'm giving a paper on him Friday. You know, he reminds me of you. Not in terms of his preferences. And he's certainly not as attractive. But you and he share a similar ideological line on many questions, as well as faith in the power to redeem the body through mental exertion. Or is it to redeem the mind through bodily exertion? Both, I guess. Anyway, if you haven't read him lately, he might interest you in a new way.

You know, just last week when I had the stomach flu and was pretty much doing nothing other than napping or lying in bed reading throughout 24 hour cycles, I was walking around the house bemoaning the fact that we could have 3000+ books in this house and not one single book that I wanted to read or re-read (yes, stomach flu apparently makes me persnickety). And my eyes kept coming back to the Burroughs because I haven't read any Burroughs in a **LONG** time and I kept actively dismissing it, thinking "if I read Burroughs now, my head will explode" (stomach flu also apparently makes me very dramatic). I just didn't feel *up* to it, if you know what I mean.

And once I was recovered, I was wondering why that was, and it's on my mental list of "re-read in the very near future" because of that. I'm kicking myself now, acourse, that I didn't read it while sick, because just the idea of it was pushing it outside of my comfort zone... funny how puking up even water makes you forget that having your head explode might be a good thing. :)

I was reading the interviews in The Job while waiting in Urgent Care. They would surely hold appeal for you.

I'd read Naked Lunch repeatedly and all three books in the subsequent "Nova" trilogy, but never all four simultaneously, as I have over the past week. I already liked Burroughs a lot. But I have much greater appreciation for him now than I used to. Read all together, the books conspire to give a sense of intellectual cohesiveness harder to discern in any one of them when read in isolation.

I hope you're feeling better soon. Sucks visiting the ER and all.

Urgent Care! It costs less. I actually don't feel that bad this time, as the negative result suggests. Just being cautious. But thanks for the well-wishing. If I do turn out to have had something "real," it will come in handy.

I didn't think I was quoting. But it wouldn't be the first time my sponge-like brain lifted a text without my conscious mind being aware.

Re: go you!

I should try that, shouldn't !? Of course, his non-fiction mode is a lucid deadpan. Maybe I can simulate his accent.

Re: go you!

i think you ought. but then, when i had a boyfriend who lectured about fascism i used to try to urge him to wear a long leather coat and take to doberpersons on chains in to the lecture, so i might not be the best person to judge.

that said, talking all day in bill's deadpan is great fun.

Re: go you!

I tried it when delivering the paper today. Came off pretty well, at least towards the end, once I'd gotten in rhythm.

I think I contracted the parasite after all, amusingly.
