Hit the Ground Running
The Arcade Fire sounded great on Saturday Night Live just now. And that's apparently not easy to do, since many excellent bands have sounded lame in that artificial context. I was ill -- the throat abscess -- when they last played in Tucson. I really regret having missed them back then, since they may not be back here for a long time. The new album Neon Bible -- thank you hipsandquips! -- has really been growing on me too. It sounds a like Funeral, to my mind. But that's clearly not a bad thing. Seeing the music I've grown familiar with over the last two weeks come to life on stage has me excited to listen too the whole record in one sitting.

Yeah, they were great. That was the first time in a long time I recall enjoying a music act on SNL.

Re: NMH on SNL

Some bands just have it when they play live. They didn't make any changes of consequence to the song, but it still sounded more exciting than on the record.

I thought they were pretty great. I totally identified with the guitar smashing after the first song. I get blind with rage when I break a string. If I was doing one goddamned song on national television and my freshly strung guitar threw a string, I'd smash the shit out of it too.

What the hell was that crank instrument on the second song?
