I love the picture. The composition as a whole, the concept, but also the little red heart shaped tag.

A weekend of rug cleaning makes for some fine photo ops! Thing One, a.k.a. Budder, is the master of the existentially concerned expression. He's like one of B. Kliban's drawings reimagined by the edgy Charles Schulz of the 1950s.

On an unrelated note, I was curious about the focus on your B+W shot of that grasshopper. It almost seemed like there was an area of blurriness between the sharp insect and the sharp wall behind it, as if there were two separate focal planes. How did you get that effect, assuming my eyes are not deceiving me in perceiving it?

hmm if I'm getting what you mean, it's because the bug is perched on a board that is closer to the lens than the background, and I'm photographing not dead on but at about a 45 degree angle, so the plane that's in focus in not in fact parallel to the BG but at an angle to it ... if you see what I mean? so there's an "island" where the plane of focus and the boards intersect but toward the edges of the picture on both sides, is blurred. And the edge of the board that's almost but not quite perpendicular to the BG appears blurred because of perspective distortion.

Ahh, yes. It seemed more pronounced somehow than the perspective distortion I'm used to looking for. Works great in terms of the compositions. A little blur is almost always a good thing.

Oh my. Those carpets really do look spectacular. I love how kitty's fur (Budder?) is all scruffed up on his back.

That's Budder alright. The contemplation of a void fills him with anxiety.
