More Than Will Met
I'm listening to the new Okkervil River album The Stage Names. Will Sheff and company have done it again. In this era when the fear of a sophomore or junior slump is all-pervasive, it's a great relief to find artists able to sustain their initial promise. Anyway, I recommend it gleefully, particularly for those of you whose musical pleasure is lyrics-driven. You can hear for yourself why on their website, which is presently streaming the record. Just go to the "Media" section.

I've been telling all my friends that this band is going to be positively HUGE... or at least Sufjan Stevens huge.

They are going to be playing Conan O'Brien on August 28th before touring. August 30th is Phoenix and allegedly they will be coming to Tucson (Congress) on Sept 1st, but it's not on the Congress website.

It's on the website, but it's part of some larger HoCo festival. From the site:

Saturday September 01 - HoCo Festival 2007 - The Tucson Music and Film Festival- NIGHT ONE!
Tonight features a fantastic National stage featuring Okkervil River and The Bellrays as well as the highly anticipated Class 0'77 Showcase with Bob Meighan, Ned Sutton, Chuck Wagon and The wheels and many more !
with Al Perry's All Star BBQ and Guitar Throwdown

Thanks for reminding me of this. I hope to see you there.

Great minds think alike! I may go to the Phoenix and Tucson shows both. I should probably write about the night I got to hang out with them in greater detail. My friend Catfish Vegas, whose experience of that hanging out was longer and richer, also wrote about it, though in a similarly skeletal way. Suffice to say, the members of Okkervil River are as smart -- and literate -- as they seem on record.

And, so far, better with each listen.
