amazing!

This made me remember my first trip across the country, which happened to take place in the early spring of 1993 (or so). I was driving my sisters car to her in Los Angeles. I had never been out west before. In Arizona, I was cleaning the windshield and I said to Mike (her boyfriend with whom I was along for the ride, really), "Where is the paper to dry the windshield?" as back East there are paper towels to dry off the window after you wash it. Mike said, "Look again." I went looking for the paper towels, and he followed up, "No look at the windshield again." I looked, and it was dry. I was amazed.

Re: amazing!

Back in the Bay Area, which is actually a lot drier than the East Coast or Midwest, we'd have to lay the tent out for hours upone returning from a camping trip to make sure it wouldn't mildew in storage. Here it takes about ten minutes on most days to get it sufficiently moisture-free.

I also have a travel story. Back in 1980, on a family vacation, we stopped at a roadside rest area near Needles, on Interstate 40 in California's Mojave Desert. My mom made tuna sandwiches. By the time she was done spreading the mayo, the bread had acquired the texture of toast.

Re: amazing!

You have reminded me to make my mirror oven. Been not planning to not do that for two years now.

Re: amazing!

I wonder if it would be possible to make a mirror microwave oven?

Re: amazing!

I don't see why not. Microwaves are just another form of EM radiation. But I would imagine the "mirrors" would have to not only be huge, but also be polarizing. As I think a significant portion of the power of microwaves is derived from the fact that they act in concert with one another in some way that escapes me at the moment... basically, they "tickle" water molecules as they fly past, and all of the microwaves are resonant. In other words, it doesn't do much good if the first photon pushes the water molecule in one direction if the next out of phase photon pushes it back the other way, undoing the work of the first.

Re: amazing!

See... you ask a goofy question, but I think it really could be done. There must be some material that is transparent to visible light, radio waves, etc... but reflects microwaves.
