*runs away screaming like Bean doesn't*

I was going through a box in the garage. I got out an old shirt and, as I was preparing to fold it, realized that the spider was right where I was about to put the fingers of my right hand. Back in the old days, I would have run screaming. But Tucson has added carbon to my steel. I calmly set the shirt down and went to get the critter jar I prepared for the scorpion you saw a photograph of a while ago. If it's a snake, though, I'm keeping my distance. And if it's "killer" bees, I'm running as fast as I can to call a professional.

Okay that motherfucker's a creepy one.

Shiny, though.

Yes, they are shiny. And aesthetically appealing, in a fright-inducing way.

Beautiful, even, but yes, a bit freaky.

"Bob," as Skylar christened her, was released to the safety of a cholla this morning. She was gleaming in the sun and, yes, beautiful.

I never noticed that marking on their backs before.

I found one floating in the dogs' waterbowl this weekend. Red spot up.

I never saw that marking before either. But it has the red hourglass. Sometimes I've seen ones without the latter. And the ones we had in California had more of a dark maroon body. I guess there are lots of variants not logged in the standard guides.

Creepy. Perfect for Halloween, what with the pumpkin in the background and all. I suppose that was on purpose :-)

Yeah, I was feeling a little cheesy in my holiday preparations. Pumpkins make such a great backdrop when they're blurry.

i would have nearly died.

When I almost put my finger on it, I had one of those shudders. But once it was safely in the glass jar, I wasn't that perturbed.

ugh, those make the ickiest popping sound when you squish them.

I'm calling PETA on you!

ha!

I don't kill any other spiders (I capture them and turn them loose), but a black widow or brown recluse dies on sight.

I understand. We usually kill them too. But I had to let this one go in the desert, after documenting it.
