The Sounds of Silence
I just looked over at my copy of 501 French Verbs and, though I never made it very far in the language, mused on how cool French conjugations can look. There's something about the ratio of characters to actually spoken phonemes that turns me on. As I was thinking about that, though, I started to hear Bruce Springsteen singing "Thunder Road." Only the lyrics were different: "Their were ghosts in the eyes of all the letters you sent away." The mind works in mysterious ways. Or, to be more precise, mine does.

"I just looked over at my copy of 501 French Verbs ..."

I'm not sure I know anyone else who could start a blog post with those words.

And it didn't even seem strange to me until I read your comment. I thought the Bruce thing was weird, but not that.

The first time I got truly drunk -- and very, very drunk it was -- was when I was in Germany, getting ready to move from one host family to another. I was still a novice in speaking the language. Anyway, in the course of drinking thirteen bottles of Beck's and half a bottle of wine in a little over an hour, I wandered through the small gathering in the house I was staying in reading aloud from 501 German Verbs. I think I was more fluent fucked up.

I'm more fluent when I toss my 501 Spanish Verbs in the trash.

Of course, the result is I spend all my time in Spain talking in the present tense ...
