Boxing Gloves
I'm in a mood to communicate some irrational exuberance. The marked-down Everlast workout goods at Marshall's were looking pretty alluring. But, since I only practice symbolic violence, I will direct my urges to watching my first boxing match in ages. The fact that I can chalk it off as "research" for something I'm working on about Manchester is an added bonus. And I will at least be able to imagine myself wreaking havoc on certain individuals, assuming that the pins I keep sticking in my travel-size Wilbur the Wildcat haven't already achieved that goal for me.

But I can't help hoping Hatton wins.

Re: boxing repulses me...

I'm not a big boxing fan, though I can appreciate the skill and athleticism it takes. I was watching with a colleague who also boxes regularly, so that helped. Somehow seeing the slugging with someone who writes about avant-garde poetry when he's not in the ring makes the brutality seem more "meta." Anyway, though I was pulling for Hatton, Mayweather was very impressive, especially towards the end.

You should watch the Steelers beat the other guys today.

I tried, but all I saw was evidence that Tom Brady had stopped his contract hold out with Mephistopheles.

Good God! They are monsters! Monsters I tell you! Those guys are robots or something. I thought I hated the Patriots before, but now... now... Oh! Man, do I detest the Patriots! But, man are they good.

It must be the work of the Horned One. Still, the thought that the Dolphins might beat them warms my heart.

Yes, 13-0 vs 0-13 is probably unprecedented in the game.

I think the Jets come first, actually, so it would be 14-0 vs. 0-14, which sounds even better.

Is this a veiled shot at the students or the administration? I'm guessing the latter, though I imagine both warrant it from time to time. In my estimation, the admin.'s DREAM is to turn the UofA into some sonoran desert cal. tech or MIT; science is overemphasized.

PS: Was your manchester research inspired by joy division/factory records?

I must be careful, having such careful readers. Otherwise the secrets of my foray into the dark arts will be revealed!

Seriously, I just picked Wilbur because I went to Cal. And because I hate everyone. Except the people I don't hate.

Yes, to an extent, on the Manchester question. I started with the Buzzcocks, but have felt the need to include the Factory scene and Mark E. Smith, at least in my reflections. The latter looks like Hatton might if he fought for another decade and drank like the proverbial fish.
