Firm Fountain of Youth

Ten years ago, the following sentences about Green Bay Packers' quarterback Brett Favre -- whom I have always liked -- would have seemed like the sportswriter's favorite sweater, worn threadbare with use:
The far more mystifying turnaround is in Favre's ability to throw the deep ball again, and with uncanny accuracy, to his wide receivers. It's as though Favre, at 38, has dipped his right arm in a fountain of youth.
Now they sound like an insinuation. When are we going to stop to make the connection between the appeal of narratives in which aging athletes return to the top of their game, the use of performance-enhancing substances, and the endless ads for products combatting erectile dysfunction that run during sports telecasts?
