I Had a Great Day
Despite everything, it's still possible for the clouds to break. I got to see the dawn drape over the Catalina Range. I had a delicious breakfast with my daughter at Café Jasper. I had a series of wonderful extended visits in office hours, including one about changing definitions of masculinity that was remarkably productive for me. I taught a great Literary Analysis course this afternoon, two and a half hours of me at my best. I rocked out to Die Ärzte on the way home. I was happy to hear Dick Vitale's voice once again gracing the airwaves. And I ate a delicious spicy tofu-ginger-and-beef dish over rice.

Yay!

I'm ready for my clouds to break. Any time they want to do that, I'm ready.

Of course, in these parts the metaphor is astonishingly inapt -- inept? -- since what we wait for is a time when the clouds roll in!

Really, though, the storms of relentless sunshine are mostly proceeding unabated in my life. Still, it's important to find something positive in the well-lit gloom.

somewhat off topic...

Sometimes I think that the only reason I actually learned any German in high school was that my teacher used Die Aerzte songs and music videos in her lesson plans. Had she used Bluemchen, my life probably would have taken a much different course.

Wow! It's amazing she didn't get fired. Of course, the fact that the lyrics are in German probably helped. But, still. Back in the pre-NWA days, it didn't get any dirtier than Die Ärzte at their dirtiest. "Das befriedet meine Triebe/Geschwisterliebe" und "Hannelores Tag ist grau/Denn Helmut Kohl schlägt seine Frau" are way over the top, for example.

It's also true, though, that the band had impeccable diction. There are many constructions I know well because I heard them over and over in their songs. "Ich war gerade auf den Weg/In die Stadtbibliothek/Da habe ich mein Herz verloren. . ." See, I can come up with quite a few lyrics that I learned auswendig. "Ich glaube ich verziehe mich/Ich verziehe mich wohl besser. . ."

Re: somewhat off topic...

Going to a weird hybrid prep school had advantages I suppose. Actually, I think the administration was more concerned with subduing the rabid drug problems that plagued the halls than they were with improper language that they probably didn't understand.

I have always found the German view of "curse words" extremely interesting, especially compared to the gender-specific world I grew up in (my brother can curse because he is a boy, but I must be a lady). For instance, they have no problem using the English version of the "F-word," but the German translation is strictly verboten. No other word is really off limits. Of course, my view of German culture is steeped in the East, which may not be entirely representative of the entire country.

Which school did you attend? I've forgotten.

No, you're right that "fuck" is more acceptable than the German equivalents. But nothing really works the same. "Ficken" certainly doesn't.

Good ol' University High, proud home of the fighting penguins. It wasn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but my social skills probably weren't "well-rounded" enough for the neighborhood school, and I've never been one for needles, which eliminated Foothills.

High school is awesome in Tucson. I recommend moving far, far away before your daughter is eligible.

Hooray for good days! And good food. You deserve the very best. So this post makes this day a pretty good day for me too.
