Precisely. That's why I wrote the entry that way, even in the lingering warmth of the moment, rather than jumping on the anti-Walters bandwagon.

You know, I've been thinking about the players on the team in the early 2000s. It's hard to believe that Arizona didn't win a title during the time of Arenas, Gardner, Walton, Iguodala etc. Then again, it's hard to see how the 1988 team could have failed to win it all.

They got awfully close in 2001, but your thoughts sum up the reality of Arizona's teams. Lute has consistently been able to bring some of the greatest talent to Tucson, even developing middling talent into quality roleplayers. But that talent never gets over the hump, whether it's an off shooting night (i.e. Kerr in '88) or a general inability to get up for big games (see any game against a top 25 team or NCAA tourney round over the past three seasons, paying particular attention to games against North Carolina, UCLA, Seton Hall and Purdue).
It's maddening. But I'll always be a fan because I've never known better. While the memories are faint, I remember attending games in McKale during the 1986 season. I'm still hoping there are seasons like those ahead for the Cats.
