I do find the ninth flawed, and yet his greatest work. The perfect sixth, for example, never quite reaches the majesty of the ninth.
I do think Wagner was right in his tempo adjustment too. Ludwig, in his deafness, tended to take things slightly too quickly. Though of course there is textual evidence to the contrary: the ode is to 'Joy', not solemnity.
Nevertheless I reckon Jupiter Optimus Maximus wouldn't have been unimpressed by Number nine.
