Sugar Shaq
There are too many variables to say whether the Phoenix Suns' daring experiment will lead to the desired end. But the second half of tonight's game against the San Antonio Spurs provided the best picture yet of what their management had in mind. After watching Shaq stumble through his first games with the team, it's stunning to see him scoring so effectively in the low post. Also, it's becoming more and more clear that his presence provides benefits even when he's sitting on the bench, because the opposing team's front line wears down much faster. I should add, in closing, that it's remarkable how many great regular season games there have been this year. The intensity far exceeds that of any year I can recall. And that means going all the way back to the days when Elvin Hayes and Wes Unseld were in the Finals.

While my memories of the NBA only date back to Moses Malone, Dr. J, Andrew Tony, Bobby Jones and Mo Cheeks (still one of my favorite squads of all time), I agree that the NBA is back. The last month has been the most exciting span of regular season play that I've seen in years, if not decades. For example, what fan would miss tonight's crucial battle between Golden State and Denver? I'm pulling for Baron Davis and Monte Ellis in this one, although as a Philly fan, I still hold a soft-spot in my heart for Allen Iverson (the toughest six-footer I've ever seen play). As to your post, the Suns looked very strong last night, and I'll be rooting for them in the Western playoffs. Speaking of the NBA playoffs--which are always exciting, even in recent years when regular-season play has left much to be desired--I'm more excited about them than I was about the NCAA tournament this year, which is unusual for me, especially over the past ten years or so.
