Not So Big
It's interesting that, of the teams remaining in the NBA playoffs, only the San Antonio Spurs have a dominant big man who plays like a big man. There are aspects of Kevin Garnett and Rasheed Wallace's games that align them with bigs, but neither spend enough time near the paint these days to be considered in the same category as Tim Duncan. And there's a good chance that Duncan will be gone after tomorrow, since the Hornets have been unbeatable at home. Whether this constitutes a trend or merely serves as another testament to the rarity of first-class bigs remains to be seen.

Good point. It's a particularly interesting trend this year during which the Suns so desperately traded for the Big Cactus. What do you think of the Lakers' Pau Gasol? Would you place him with Wallace and Garnett or in the more traditional camp of Duncan and O'Neil? Or is his game somewhere in between?

Oh, Gasol is definitely in the Garnett/Wallace mode. He is playing a little closer to the basket now with Kobe to take the primary scorer's role, but is still no banger.

What's sad about those three is that Rasheed Wallace is probably the most talented of the bunch, but because he's such a basket case, he's also the worst by a sizable margin.

Also, he's no Tim Duncan, but David West ain't too shabby.

Wallace has been better of late, but, yes, he could have been a whole lot greater over his career.

West is playing tremendously, but he's too undersized to be a big in the sense I meant.

It will be interesting to see what happens next year with Oden and Kevin Love.
