My theory that Hillary Clinton's current campaign strategy includes a plan to become the obvious choice for the Democratic Party's nominee should something happen to the front-runner now has better legs to stand on than I do. I think George Wallace is dead. But if he weren't, well. . .

Now we understand her path to the nomination.

It does seem to be her best option.

Nothing prevents her from "suspending" her candidacy, to return if something should befall Obama. What I like is the Clintonian inaccuracy (the charitable term) of the other parts of what she said. First, she ignores the fact that the whole primary calendar was shifted forward substantially this cycle, so her comment resembles saying "Easter has often been later" while ignoring that most no longer follow the Julian calendar. Also, Bill Clinton had the nomination sewn up months before June. When Paul Tsongas left the race on March 17, his remaining opponent was Jerry Brown. Clinton wound up with more than five times as many delegates as Brown. RFK had only entered the race on March 16.
